Hello everyone, my name is Eric Churus and I am proud to be the Computer/Technology teacher at Burnet Middle School. I spent the seven years teaching in multiple schools and subjects before obtaining my current position. I have always had a strong interest in technology and am excited to help students develop the skills needed to succeed in the 21st Century.
Below you can find answers to my FAQ's from students and parents.
I believe that students need to be challenged above where they think they currently are. Children need to realize that they are capable of more than they believe. Children also need to learn that failing is part of life that it is through failure that we learn. Once students see failure as a beginning not an ending and that they are capable persevering though it they will understand how to achieve great success in life.
Additionally, I believe that students need to be able to learn on their own. Many of my assignments are done as independent work with instructions provided either through custom made videos or step my step printed directions. I am always there to support and aide my students when needed but I expect them to try on their own first.
I became a teacher because I have always liked helping people, especially children. I always enjoyed helping people learn new skills and that look of joy on their face when they finally understood a concept.
I was inspired by two of my high school teacher Mr. Thomas my freshman Social Studies teacher who showed me that teaching can be a fun job while still having students learn; and Mr. Laird my senior Humanities teacher who opened my eyes to the parts of history often ignored in the classrooms but are core to truly appreciating historical cultures and time periods.
It is really hard not to picture myself as a teacher. I had decided to pursue it so early in life that it has been a primary focus for a long time. However, before deciding to become a teacher I wanted to go into TV and Film Production. As I child I always dreamed about being a cameraman for a famous TV show or movie and having my name scroll up during the ending credits.
I was so interested in this field that I chose C.A.S.T. (now TV Production) in High School as my elective course for three years
After graduating from Union High School (2004) I first attended Union County College for two years and earned my Associates Degree in Education (2006). I then went to to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) to complete my college education and earned my degrees in History and Secondary Education (2007). Shortly after I went to Kean University to get my certification as a Special Education teacher (2009).
My hobbies happen to be incredibly varied. By many accounts I am a geek; I enjoy Star Wars, Star Trek, Magic the Gathering, computer and board games, as well as learning to code and program.
Interests would be going museums, parks, plays, and other points of interest. One of my favorite places to visit is the Grounds for Sculpture. It's a wonderful outdoor art museum, and the place where I proposed to my wife. Best part is that it is in NJ and you get can a pass to get in for free from the Public Library!! :)
I also enjoy going out for a nice jog, swimming, and hiking. Almost any activity to get me outdoors will work. Some of my best memories come from just sitting around a fire with friends talking. I have played softball in the local league for several years.
I would be very dishonest if I did not mention my passion for video games. I am an avid gamer playing a variety of games on the PC and Switch. The main games I play though are World of Warcraft, Rocket League, and Pokemon. I am also very excited because we are planning on starting an Esports program at BMS next school year.
One that always stands out is that I am an Eagle Scout. My project was to renovate the Children's Department of the Union Public Library.
Additionally, I am able to say the Alphabet backwards; which I learned while learning to type my freshman year of high school.
I also have built my own computer at home.
Yes, in 2012 I married my high school sweetheart. We do not currently have any children but hope to have some in the future.
