Welcome AVID students!
What is AVID?
Many students in our nation's schools want to attend college and are willing to work hard, but lack true opportunities to become college-ready.
AVID equips teachers and schools with tools to help these students succeed in college and careers.
Held for one period a day.
Provides academic, social, and emotional support.
Helps students succeed in rigorous coursework.
Supports students in the AVID Elective class.
Benefits all students across the campus.
Provides classroom activities, teaching practices, and academic behaviors that enhance engagement and success.
Strategies learned in AVID can help all students become more college and career ready.
What happens in an AVID class?
The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICOR method, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. AVID curriculum is used in AVID elective classes and in content-area classes in AVID schools. Additionally, students learn about college, and build community.
The AVID Curriculum
The AVID curriculum revolves requiring students to maintain a well-organized AVID Binder in which students take notes for all their academic classes. Students participate in tutorials where students collaborate together to solve problems they are experiencing in their core classes. In addition, writing, reading, and higher level thinking strategies are emphasized.
How do I apply?
Recruitment happens mid-spring each year for incoming 7th graders. A minimum 2.5 gpa is required. If you are interested in applying and interviewing for the AVID elective or being placed on the waitlist during the school year- please email Mrs. McCann jordan.mccann@trusd.net.Â
