Every Wednesday the students will run the mile. If it is raining, they will run it on the next possible day. The mile is graded three different ways in a weekly rotation.
The first one is a Timed Mile. This is based on the California State standard of 8 minutes. Any time after 8 minutes students start to lose more points every minute. This mile is worth 30 points. ( See scale to the right).
The second way the mile is graded is an Effort Mile. This is based on a student’s individual effort (the average mile time they are capable of running) during the mile. This is mile is worth 20 points. For example, if two students finish the mile at the 12 minute mark and one of them averages a 9 minute mile while the other student averages a 14 min mile, the student that averages a 14 minute mile will receive a higher grade because they have put forth more effort.
The third mile rotation is a 15 minute mile. This is a pass or fail mile. If students finish under the 15 minute mark then they get full credit and an F if they finish over 15 minutes. This time is almost double the state standard. This is mile is worth 20 points.
A few times a year I will also do a Coach’s mile which is where I run with the students. I run two sides and walk two sides. The students have to finish in front of me to receive full credit. This is mile is worth 20 points.
