The Junior Ranger Program offers a fantastic opportunity for children aged between 8 and 12, regardless of their economic background, to engage with Wildlands' mission of preserving the earth's beauty and biodiversity. This initiative aims to provide enriching programs that allow kids to discover the wonders of nature and cultivate a deep appreciation for the environment. By participating in the Junior Ranger Program, children can immerse themselves in exploring and learning about the natural world that surrounds them, fostering a sense of curiosity and stewardship for the planet.
Objectives:
Junior Rangers will learn about The Wildlands Conservancy and The Oak Glen Preserve, as well as have an opportunity to visit other Wildlands preserves.
Junior Rangers will be asked to complete various tasks such as:
Collect litter and remove graffiti to help keep trails natural looking.
Maintain trails and garden areas by participating in activities such as invasive plant removal and native planting.
Participate in a naturalist/ranger-led outdoor education activities.
Partake in guided hikes or lead their own Kids-for-Kids hike.
Junior Rangers will also learn about:
The ecology of California native plants.
Plant and plant family identification.
Wildlife scats and tracks identification.
Wildlife identification of local birds, mammals, reptiles, butterflies, etc.
Public speaking, communication, and leadership skills.
Junior Rangers sign-up to help The Wildlands Conservancy's Naturalists and Rangers with public educational activities. Junior Rangers also help maintain the Southern California Montane Botanic Garden and Children's Outdoor Discovery Center.
The Year-Round Junior Ranger Program operates throughout the year and participants must complete a minimum of 20 hours between March - October.
The Junior Ranger Summer Adventure Program (May through the beginning of August), which provides junior rangers ages 8-12 years old with an involved experience and requires commitment to complete. Upon completion of the Summer Adventure program, Junior Rangers will receive a certificate and may participate in the camp-out at the Oak Glen Preserve.

Junior Rangers must complete two volunteer days / garden days, two workshops, four public programs, and a workbook between May - August.
During your experience, you will learn about the ecology of California native plants, plant identification, wildlife scat and track identification, and identification of local birds, mammals, reptiles, and various insects. Also, Junior Rangers will gain valuable experience in public speaking, communication, and leadership. Additionally, you will have an opportunity to camp out on the Oak Glen Preserve Property. You and your family will pitch tents, explore Oak Glen at night, and play games.
