Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How many Library books may I check out at one time?
A. As many as you can carry!
Q. How long may I keep the books out?
A. Library books are on a three-week circulation cycle, but you may renew the book(s) for as many three-week cycles as you'd like, unless another student has a hold on that title.
Q. Oops. I kept a book past its due date. Now what?
A. We do not currently charge late fines for past due books, but we hope that you will return the book by the due date stamped inside the book. There may be others who would like to read the book you have sitting on your desk or under your bed at home. So, please be considerate of others and return your Library books on time.
Q. How do I print in the Library?
A. We have a Chromebooks available for student use in the Library. You can print wirelessly from one of the Chromebooks in the Library. We do not charge for printing. We expect you to print school-related items only and not print multiple copies of a document. (That's what a photocopier is for.) The printer prints in black-and-white only . Please print double-sided if you can!
Q. May I eat my lunch in the Library?
A. Sorry, no. You may bring your covered drink inside: water, juice, Nitro Cold Brew with Sweet Cream, etc., but please finish your food outside or in the foyer before you come inside. We do have bugs and pests on campus that are attracted to left-behind food, and we would prefer to keep them outside rather than in. And yes, some students invariable leave behind food and/or crumbs and/or wrappers.
Q. May I have my club meeting in the library?
A. Yes! Contact Ms. Hildreth in K-1 for a Facilities Request.

Book Policies
Library books and textbooks are the property of South High School and are available for checkout for enrolled students with a current student identification card.
Library books are books freely chosen by the student for recreational reading or class assignment purposes.
Library books are checked out for three-week periods. Students may check out a many library books as they like, within reason. Students may renew library books before the due date for an additional three weeks and for as many three-week periods as needed during the current school year until the final due date in June, unless the book has been placed on hold by another student. Lost or damaged library books are subject to the same replacement policies as textbooks noted below.
Textbooks are the books assigned by the teacher to the class as a whole to be read in support of the curriculum. This includes designated core and supplemental reading novels.
All textbooks are to be returned by the end of the school year, when a student is no longer enrolled in the class for which he has checked out a textbook, or when the textbook is to be replaced with a different edition or book at the teacher’s request.
Each student is issued one copy of the textbook(s) requested by the teacher for the course. Some courses do not require textbooks. Unless specified in a student’s IEP (Individualized Education Plan) or 504 Plan, under doctor’s orders, or requested by Administration, students are not issued more than one copy of the same textbook.
Students are responsible for materials checked out on their library/textbook record. Students are expected to keep the materials checked out to them in acceptable condition. Students are expected to review books issued to them for damages. Any damage to or graffiti in the book needs to be reported before the student leaves the textbook window or immediately upon discovery in order for a replacement copy to be issued without charge.
Students are expected to pay the replacement cost of lost books and/or books that are damaged beyond repair and/or that cannot be reissued to another student. Students who return books with damage and/or graffiti that is capable of being repaired and reissued will be charged a repair fee commensurate with the damage incurred. If a student is unable to afford the cost of the book(s), payment plans or voluntary work programs in lieu of payment are available. In accordance with California Education Code 48904(b)(1), South High School may withhold the grades, diploma, and/or transcript of the student responsible for the loss or damage.
