After a fun mini unit of archery, the Magnet Middle School students are picking up an new sport, volleyball! This volleyball unit is being played by 6th graders all the way through 8th graders. In this unit the students are learning to not only play the sport of volleyball, but develop the critical communication, leadership, and sportsmanship skills that contribute to the game. While the ball is in the air, they can communicate by either saying “mine” or “yours” when the ball is coming to them, so the other players do not bump into them.
They are also working together to get the ball across the net. The players can hit the ball up to three times when the ball is on their side. For the ball to get over the net, they will have to communicate and work as a team. The students during this unit also work on serving, bumping and setting. These are the key ways to hit the ball over the net. The students and their teams are given points on fair play, and if they win or lose the game. To add on to this, a student intern from the University of Alabama is coming here to teach us about this sport. Students are excited and hyped for the upcoming volleyball championship. Lets see who’s in!
