Part of the University of Alabama School of Music’s Community Music School, the Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra is an ensemble designed for intermediate to advanced musicians seeking a challenge. Students from TMSM as well as middle and high schools around Tuscaloosa meet every Monday from 5:30-7:00 to rehearse concert pieces such as “Millennium by Richard Meyer, “Allegro from Spring of the Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi and “Peer Gynt Suite no 1” by Edvard Grieg. Being a part of an ensemble such as this is a significant way to get practice outside of school, as well as gain valuable experience with more advanced pieces, and collaborating with peers in a positive, uplifting environment filled with students passionate about music. Some familiar names from the Magnet include Aiden Barry, Catharine Li, LeAnna Roberts, Micah Kelleher, Alyssa Mack and Reggie Robinson, to name a few.
Conducted by University faculty member Dr. Amir Zaheri, rehearsals are serious, but always with a touch of silliness and fun! TYO is constantly recruiting new members and welcomes interested students that play string or band instruments to audition in the spring semester. We hope you join us!
