Everybody knows Tuscaloosa is celebrating its bicentennial this year. For those of you who don’t know this was happening, here it is, because Tuscaloosa is celebrating its bicentennial. I thought of comparing the two greatest coaches in College Football history. Can you guess who they are? Yup, Paul Bear Bryant and Coach Nick Saban. Nick Saban has won 5 national championship titles at Alabama since the start of his coaching in 2007. Paul W. "Bear" Bryant on the other hand has won 6 national championships for Alabama. Bryant’s record at Alabama was 193-32-5, and over his 38 years of coaching for different teams like Kentucky, Texas A&M, Maryland, and Alabama, he has 323 - 85 - 17. Bear Bryant took 29 teams to bowl games and a staggering 15 to conference championships. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, out of all schools he had coached, no one won more games than Alabama. Bryant’s type of playing style was more focused on aggressive defense and execution of special teams. By molding the team like this, he made Alabama very successful in his years of coaching.
Nick Saban, who's Alabama coaching career began in 2007. Ever since then, he has had a recored of 136 - 20. He has taken Alabama to 14 bowl games and won 10 of them. He has had seven SEC Western Division titles, Five SEC championships, and Five national championships, all with Alabama. He first clashed at LSU before coaching at Alabama. At LSU, he won one championship, leaving him with 6 championships under his belt. Nick Saban's coaching style is more of a balance, as he wants his players to excel in both offense and defense.
In all, Saban and Bryant are two really good coaches. They both are quite similar in coaching style, though Saban has won more National titles than Bryant. When it comes to experience, Bear Bryant has the advantage, because of all the teams he had coached and taken to Bowl Games and Conference Championships. Comparing the two coaches who have accomplished greatness over the years is amazing to watch and analyze.
