Day 9 - Our Last Day in Maine

We were blessed to have perfect weather for this trip….sunny every day! We found Maine to be the perfect destination to connect with nature. We loved the dramatic rugged rocky coast and breathing the Atlantic Ocean air. Mid-coast Maine, where we spent most of our time, has many quaint towns with interesting 19th century brick architecture and idyllic harbors and is less busy than the southern Maine beaches area. Getting off the main roads and driving down the peninsulas we enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere of the historic fishing villages and many lighthouses along the rocky coastline.

Whenever we travel, we like to try some interesting food that is famous in that particular region. Of course Maine is famous for it’s lobster (lobstah) and lobster rolls and blueberries, but we had never tried their Whoopie Pies. What is a Whoopie Pie, exactly? Well, it is actually not a pie at all! It is a hand-held dessert originally made with white, cream filling sandwiched between two soft chocolate cakes. They have become so popular in Maine that they now can be found in every imaginable flavor combination. Our best find was a pumpkin whoopie pie which was so large and rich we only ate ¼ at a time. We also tried one of the originals and a chocolate with peanut butter cream filling.

Blueberry everything! Pies, pancakes, ice cream, jams, jellies, syrups…..you name it….they have it….and it’s all delicious! Maine is the United States’ largest producer of wild blueberries. The wild blueberry, sometimes called the low-bush blueberry, is native to Maine and thrives in its challenging seasons. These hardy little berries are generally smaller than their high-bush cousins and, say their most ardent fans, are juicier and more flavorful as well. Wild blueberries also pack a powerful punch of natural antioxidants, up to two times that of regular blueberries.

Of course we had our fill of fresh Maine seafood. Lots of haddock, scallops, lobster, and shrimp…..all fresh and tasty!

We had lunch, took one last harbor walk and started packing for our 500 mile trip home.
