Day 6 - 8/27/2018 - Exploring Homer

Homer is billed as “The Halibut Fishing Capital of Alaska” but non-anglers revel in this charming small town that is an eclectic mix of artists, fishermen, and outdoor lovers drawn by its slow pace and postcard setting by the clear-water bay. After a hearty delicious breakfast and great chat with our innkeeper, Marcella, we visited the Island & Ocean Visitor Center. The Center houses interpretive and interactive exhibits that provide an introduction to the rich environment, its inhabitants, and the important biological research of Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.

After lunch we spent some time at the Pratt Museum which hosts indoor exhibits of natural history, Native cultures, art, homesteading, quilts, fishing, and marine ecology. Since the morning rain had stopped by the time we finished inside, we were able to see their outdoor exhibit of the historic Harrington cabin, and their botanical garden

We then walked the Beluga Slough Trail along the tidelands of Bishops Beach and were lucky to get up close and personal with a beautiful eagle perched overhead in a tree and another feeding on the flats nearby.

Since the sun came out this afternoon, we drove out Homer Spit to “The End of the Road”. The Spit is a 4.5 mile strip of sand and gravel jutting out into Kachemak Bay believed to be the remains of an ancient glacial moraine reshaped by ocean currents. Today on the Spit there are shops. Art galleries, seafood restaurants, beaches and a hotel at the tip called “Land’s End”.

On our drive back up the hill to our Inn we stopped at an overlook with a view of the Spit, Kachemak Bay, and Wosnesenski Glacier. We also saw 2 moose grazing alongside the road. They were a little skittish and walked away when we stopped to take their picture.
