HELPFUL POWERPOINTS

Check out the powerpoints below for more information regarding financial aid, college portals, and more.

Creating and Using Your FSA ID

Senior Tranistions- UC/CSU/CC/$$$ 2021-2022

WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID?

1.Create an FSA ID

You must have a STUDENT FSA ID for the FAFSA. If your parent or guardian has a social security number, they ALSO need a PARENT FSA ID. The FSA ID allows you and your parent/guardian to sign electronically. This step is NOT the FAFSA. You still must complete the application.

If you are undocumented or a dreamer, you will not need this step for the CA DreamAct Application.

2. Apply!

For students who have a social complete the FAFSA

Students who are undocumented/dreamers complete the CA DREAM ACT

You must complete and submit your FAFSA. A parent or guardian without a social security number will need to sign and mail in a signature page. Please check your personal emails for updates or actions needed regarding your FAFSA.

What do I need to complete the FAFSA or CA DREAM ACT?

3. Create a CSAC account

You probably received an email telling you to create a WEBGRANTS 4 STUDENTS account by visiting mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov. This website is where you can check the status of your Cal Grant.

After creating an account, be sure to do the following:

  1. Enter your college of attendance

  2. After graduation, log back in and verify you graduated from high school.

Understanding and Accepting your Financial Aid Package

4. Review your SAR

What is a SAR? A report that will review your financial aid eligibility. Your Student Aid Report can be found on the FAFSA website. This should be available by the spring. You can check out the "Understanding your Financial Aid Package" Slides once you have received your package and need guidance navigating through it.

Check out this video to help understand your SAR.

HOW WILL I RECEIVE MY FINANCIAL AID?

How you receive your financial aid depends on the type of aid you accepted.

Grants and Student Loans

Typically, the school first applies your grant or loan money toward your tuition, fees, and (if you live on campus) room and board. Any money left over is paid to you directly for other education expenses.

You will need a bank account once it is time for you to go to college in order to access financial aid funds. Not sure what bank to use? Check what ATMs are located on the campus of the college you will be attending or banks that will be close to where you live so you can avoid fees. There are many banks that have accounts specifically designed for students which may offer different incentives, including waiving maintenance, withdrawal, or overdraft fees. Check out the link below for more information:

If you get your loan money, but then you realize that you don’t need the money after all, you may cancel all or part of your loan within 120 days of receiving it and no interest or fees will be charged.

TOP TIPS FOR A SMOOTH TRANSITION

Accept admission and pay enrollment fees BY MAY 1st. Make sure to sign up for orientation and check TO DO list and college email account for any and all additional requested documents.

1.Check your college email and take action!

Schools may be emailing you with documents needed, deadlines, etc. Email is the school's primary way of communicating with you so check your college email daily. (Above is an example of an MJC email from financial aid)

2.Check portal and To-Do list regularly

Your portal is where you view admissions and financial aid, accept/decline financial aid, view to do list, holds, etc!

3. Advocate for yourself!

Be sure to ask questions when you don't understand. If the person in front of you, can't or won't help you, find someone else. If someone doesn't return your phone call, call back. If you don't know what you need, say it. SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF!

4. Be Curious

Curiosity will drive you to ask questions, explore, try new things, and consider others' perspectives and opinions. Always stay curious.
