TOOLBOX

The CARE Program is proud to support TOOLBOX as TUSD's social emotional learning curriculum! From classroom lessons to small groups, we are thrilled to help students learn about their tools.

TOOLBOX is a research-based social-emotional learning curriculum. It teaches capacities that are critical for academic and life success, including coping and social skills.

Years of research in the field of childhood resiliency and social-emotional learning have shown the many benefits of programs like TOOLBOX. Data from 213 studies indicates that SEL programs are associated with some of these positive results:

  • Improved attitudes about self and others

  • Increased pro-social behaviors

  • Lower levels of problem behaviors & emotional distress

  • Improved academic performance

(Catalano et al., 2002; Greenberg et al., 2003; Zins et al., 2004).

Turlock Unified School District has adopted TOOLBOX for use in grades K-8. Julien, Cunningham, and Crowell Schools have TOOLBOX offered to students site-wide, with all staff (including classified and after school staff) trained in Toolbox.

We love that TOOLBOX is a simple concept; there are 12 tools that we all already have inside of us. Each of these tools plays an important role in helping us cope, manage stress, and solve problems. We encourage parents and caregivers to learn the tools (including the nonverbal hand gestures!) and begin using them at home as well. This will help students to continue practicing the skills they are learning at school, and further boost the benefits research has shown.

Each tool has an icon, a hand gesture, and a tagline.
