Supplemental English Language Development Program
Newcomer is an umbrella term for foreign-born students who have recently arrived in the United States. Newcomer students may include, but are not limited to, asylees, refugees, unaccompanied youth, undocumented youth, migratory students, and other immigrant children and youth identified by the local educational agencies (LEAs). Newcomer students come from many different countries and diverse cultural backgrounds. (California Department of Education)
Three District Itinerant ELD Teachers and one District Itinerant English Language Development (ELD) Paraprofessional provide supplemental ELD support to Newcomer students, grades K-6. Services are provided in-person. Groups are seen throughout the school day for 30 minute sessions.
Ms. Villalobos
Ms. Villalobos has been teaching for 30 years. She has taught first and second grade, Special Education, and is currently a teacher for Newcomer students in our district. She loves working with and learning from her students from around the globe.
In her free time, Ms. Villalobos, or Ms. V., enjoys spending time with her family, swimming, crafting, and taking walks in her neighborhood.
Mrs. Maldonado-Higle
Mrs. Maldonado- Higle has been teaching for 28 years. She has taught kindergarten, first, second, and third grade. In addition, she has been a reading specialist supporting students who were struggling to read and write in English and in Spanish. She enjoys getting to learn more about her student's home cultures and languages.
In her free time, Mrs. Maldonado-Higle also enjoys spending time with family, gardening, visiting the beach, listening to music, and going for walks in nature.
Mrs. Cantu
Mrs. Cantu has taught in the district for 21 years. She has taught 3rd grade, 2nd grade and 4th grade. She enjoys learning about new cultures and new languages from around the world through her students. Teaching English to English learners has been a passion of hers for many years.
During her free time, she enjoys going to the lake and watching college football, but most of all she enjoys spending as much time as she can with her children and with the most recent addition to her family, her baby granddaughter.
