Frequently Asked Questions
What is dual enrollment?
Dual enrollment provides current high school students the opportunity to get an early start on earning college credit. Many courses are transferable to four-year colleges and universities; others lead to a short-term certificate and/or associate degree.
Am I ready and do I have time?
A student's high school grades and commitments should come first. All college courses end up on college transcripts which follow you to whatever is next (jobs, graduate school applications, entry into specific programs, such as nursing, med school, etc). College courses require time. Consider what your academic, work, and extracurricular load is each semester and if you honestly have the time to commit to the course.
What is the cost?
Tuition fees for dual enrollment courses is waived BUT semester fees still remain. However, there is a Student Services Fee and Student Health Fee that is the student's responsibility. There is an optional fee waiver available to reduce the cost that may be completed and submitted to the MJC Business Office AFTER course registration. Also, consider textbook costs.
How many courses can I take?
If you have never taken a course before, it is recommended to start with one class. If you have taken college-level courses before and are comfortable with the workload, students may choose to take more. The max number of units a student can take through dual enrollment is 11. After 11 units in a single semester, students are not waived the tuition fee and must pay full price for all courses.
Which classes should I take?
First thing to consider is where you want to go to college. For students planning on transferring to a CSU (California State University) or UC (University of California) campus, Cal-GETC is the general education pattern that is advised to follow. If you know you want to attend a CSU or UC, review the CAL-GETC transfer pattern. Private universities may have different requirements. Please refer to each university individually.
Keep in mind that if you are in AP courses there may be some overlap. Research what your AP scores will count for here: AP Credit Policy Search
Explore starting out with classes that fulfill social science, history, arts/humanities, and/or communication requirements.
Each semester MJC offers designated courses for high school students. This means that ONLY high school students can sign up for these classes; however, students can sign up for ANY open course MJC offers. Courses not on the list will simply be filled with other college students, not just fellow high school students. Search for open classes here:
What is an articulated course?
An articulated course is a class that students attend during the regular school day that allows them to earn high school credit and COLLEGE UNITS at the same time if they complete specific steps.
What are the steps?
The classroom teacher will lead the class in applying to Modesto Junior College (MJC) and completing the Student Request to Participate.
Students MUST pass the class with an A or B and possibly meet specific requirements, such as passing an exam or turning in a portfolio.
If above steps are completed, student grade of an A or B will be sent to MJC and reported on their MJC transcript. Students will also be able to see the college credits on their high school transcript no later than the end of the 1st semester of the following academic year.
Once a student is a senior, how do they access the units they have earned?
Upon graduation, it is the students responsibility to send MJC transcripts to final college of enrollment. For example, CSU, Stanislaus, UC San Diego, Merced College, etc. Students attending MJC will not need to send transcripts.
To view MJC transcripts, log into student Piratesnet account and click "unofficial transcript." Students can request OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS from MJC here: MJC Transcript Request
What is Early College?
TUSD students are able to enroll in a 3-unit college course that is taught at their high school site during A-period, but units are earned through Stanislaus State.
What CSU, Stanislaus courses are offered?
The classes rotate on a 2-year rotation, but are subject to change. Previous courses have included classes, such as Ethnic Studies, Sociology, Philosophy, and Geography.
Will these classes transfer to any college/university? If they don't, why should I take them?
The college courses are transferable to other universities within the California State University (CSU) system; however, the course may or may not transfer to universities within the University of California system (UC) or private or out-of-state colleges
Even if the college you attend doesn't accept the units, completing these courses is still helpful as it makes students more competitive in the admission process.
Who can enroll in the Early College classes?
This opportunity is for juniors and seniors who have a 3.0 or above.
How does a student sign up for the CSU, Stanislaus Early College courses?
Courses will be advertised in grade-level Google Classrooms each semester and are first-come, first-served.
Sign ups begin in August for the fall semester and late November through December for the spring semester.
Once a student is a senior, how do they access the units they have earned?
Upon graduation, it is the students responsibility to send CSU, Stanislaus transcripts to final college of enrollment; however, students attending CSU, Stanislaus will not need to send transcripts as they will be on file with the university.
Students can request official transcripts from Stan State here: Stan State Transcript Request
