Course Title: Pre AP Chemistry Instructor: Gerald Griffin

Course Length: One Year Room Number: 155

I. Course Description

Pre AP Chemistry is a two semester laboratory science which emphasizes the recognition of scientific methods, the use of the periodic table as an important tool of the study of chemistry, the use of mathematics as the language and tool of science, and the development of skills, techniques, and attitudes related to laboratory procedures and activities.

The class will be broken down into four components, testing which will include some AP style free response type questions, laboratory exercises, homework which may include readings and article summaries, and discussion which will include lecture, note taking, and interactive discussions.

II. Course Overview

First Quarter

This quarter will cover Laboratory Safety and Procedures and then proceed into Periodic Table, Atomic Structure, Chemical Nomenclature, Chemical Formulas.

Second Quarter

This quarter will cover Stoichiometry, States of Matter, Chemical Equations and Reactions.

Third Quarter

This quarter will cover Ions in Solutions, Reaction Kinetics and Chemical Equilibrium.

Fourth Quarter

This quarter will cover Chemical Equilibrium, Oxidation Reduction Reactions and may touch upon Nuclear and Electro Chemistry.

III. Textbook

Modern Chemistry, Davis et al. Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Austin, Texas or Chemistry: Matter and Change. Buthelezi et al. McGraw Hill, Columbus Ohio.

IV. Expectations

1. Excellence is expected in all assignments and student conduct.

2. Students are to respect the ideas and opinions of others.

3. Students must be able to justify their opinions with fact or observations.

4. Students will responsible for academic achievement and academic misconduct will not be tolerated. This includes plagiarism and copying.

5. Students must attend class and abide by Edison HS rules and regulations.

6. Students will need to have a scientific calculator by the third week of school.

7. Students will not hinder the learning of any of their classmates.

V. Grading Policies

Assignments are due on the date unless prior arrangements have been made. In the event of a catastrophic event then accommodations can be made. Each student is responsible for their work and maintaining their assignments and turning them in on a timely fashion. Any assignment not turned in on the due date without an exemption will be given a zero.

The Grading Scale is as follows;

90 – 100% A

80-89% B

70-79% C

60-69% D

59% or less F

VI. Safety Policy

Student safety is the number one concern in the science classroom and laboratory. All students will obey and follow all science lab safety rules at all times and failure to do so will exclude the student from all science laboratory activities until the student regains their laboratory standing in the classroom. A complete list of Laboratory Safety Rules will be given to the student in the second week of school.
