Here are some pieces by composers we have learned about in music class.
Here is The Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns. We learned about it in 1st grade in music class, but this is a great piece for anyone to listen to. As you listen to the music for each animal, try one or more of the following activities. Feel free to write to me and tell me how it went! littlefielda@tukwila.wednet.edu or googledocs.
Move to the music the way the animal would move. Listen to see if you should move fast or slow or bumpy or smooth?
Draw a picture of each animal (pause if you need to to finish your drawing).
Write a poem or short story about the animal - What might the animal be doing? Is he alone or with friends? Is she on an adventure?
Writing/Discussion Prompts:
- What instruments do you hear?
- How did Camille use the instruments differently for the different animals?
- Pick two to compare and contrast the tempo (speed), dynamics (loud/soft) and timbre/tone color (quality of the sound - bumpy, smooth, bouncy, rough).
- What was your favorite and why?
In 2nd grade, we learned Bach's Fugue in G minor. We sang it with these lyrics. See how many times you can hear that theme in this piece. You can also see how the organ is played in this video!
J. S. Bach was born in 1685
Married twice he had 20 children
Many of whom became musicians
And he wrote this in g minor as a fugue
Just a reminder, a fugue takes a short theme, or melody, and repeats it in many ways.
These are fun songs with musical concepts, several of which we have watched in music class
Here's some of our favorites from music class. I'll add more soon. Enjoy!
We will start with The Magic Flute, but I will add more.
This year, NOISE was planning to present Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute (one of my favorites!). Since we didn't get to see them perform, here are some scenes from the opera. They are from several different companies, so the characters may look different in the different videos. As a reminder, Tamino and Papageno are sent by the Queen to the Night on a quest to rescue Princess Pamina from Sorastro. As it turns out, Sorastro had actually rescued Pamina from her mother, who turns out to be a villain! Pamina and Tamino team up to defeat the forces of evil, with the help of a magic flute, while Papageno looks for his Papageno.
The Queen of the Night tells her daughter, Pamina, to kill Sorastro. If she refused, the queen would no longer be her mother! Of course, Pamina refused! Here are two different versions to compare and contrast:
In the Magic Flute, Papageno finally meets up with Papagena. They are happy to have found each other and discuss their future together with lots of little Papagenos and Papagenas.
We listened to a bit of Jazz in music class. Here are some examples to start with, and I'll be adding more!
This photo is of Jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald, Queen of Scat!
Cab Calloway is an interesting performer. He's a little goofy, but has lots of fun with scat singing!
