In Xafsa’s freshman year, she was enrolled in Intro to Biotech. In this course, she learned some necessary skills needed in the biotech field. She learned skills like how to handle lab equipment, how to extract DNA from cells, how to streak plates, etc. One main experiment that she worked on was the yeast evolution project, which consisted throughout most of the course. The purpose of this project was to observe and learn about how yeast grows in different environments.
Currently, Xafsa is working on lab activities listed in the biotechnology textbook. She just finished working on making solutions using TAE buffer and NaCI. She is now working on making microbiology media, which includes pouring agar plates. She is still working to improve certain skills used in labs.
Outside of school, Xafsa likes to spend time with friends and family. She was born and raised in Tukwila, Washington. Her parents are both immigrants from Somalia. Her future career is still undecided, but she is thinking about pursuing a career in the medical field. Hopefully soon, she will find a career that interests her.
