As a student at Foster High School, Saniya has been exposed to DNA extraction, making microbiological media, PCR, ELISA, and yeast extraction. Each of these projects was done as part of the course "Intro to Biotech". Among all the labs so far, yEvo (yeast) has made a significant impact on her. This lab took place over two months, with yeast being extracted from an old environment and then being conditioned in a new, concentrated environment. Throughout Saniya's participation in this research, she gained insight into how scientists in the real world are able to constantly conduct research and gather information.
As part of current projects, microbiology media are being created for use in the lab in the future. A future research project will investigate Koch's Postulates in more depth. Identification of potential pathogens, along with isolation and culture of the suspected pathogen, all need to be done in this process. This will be achieved by examining dairy products for active pathogens, with her leading research question being "what causes yogurtness?"
In her spare time, Saniya enjoys playing badminton, listening to music, and spend time with family and friends. She is currently a sophomore enrolled in Foster High School. With her interest in biological sciences, Saniya aims to become one of the few people in her family to have a successful career in the medical field. Having immigrant parents, her primary goal is to make her parents proud by achieving the opportunities they never had.
