In Rhianna’s freshman year of highschool at Foster, she took the science class Intro To Biotech. Rhianna worked on various projects while her biggest one being the yEvo project. She and her labmates worked on a project where they would test to evolve their yeast while comparing each other’s results. The yEvo project tested the yeast mutations and how they adapted to their environments being filled with drugs. The drugs were supposed to kill the yeast and there were two different types of yeast to track over the course of 10-11 weeks. Rhianna was able to keep the yeast alive in an environment that they shouldn’t be able to due to how much drug was being added in the yeast’s home. Other projects Rhianna has done outside of this was learning to isolate DNA bacteria and yeast colonies and cloning DNA using PCR.
Currently, in Rhianna’s sophomore year of highschool she continued on from Intro to Biotech and is now enrolled in the Advanced Biomedical Sciences class at Foster High. Rhianna is now working on partnered projects rather than class ones and she has just made LB agar and LB broth that were poured into plates. She is looking forward to working on more long-term projects involved with evolution. She is also hoping for her name to be included into a Renz Lab paper.
Rhianna was born and raised in the Philippines. She lived in the Philippines for 5 years where she was able to learn the values of Filipino culture from respecting your elders, working hard towards your goals and keeping a positive outlook on life. Rhianna is now currently part of the ASB class for sophomores while juggling sports and Minds Matter, building up her extracurriculars. Although Rhianna hasn’t found a clear path for what she will be doing for University yet, taking these classes her first two years of highschool has been very influential. She has now been looking into pursuing something medicine and healthcare related, hoping to be able to help those around her.
