Enrolled in intro to biotechnology in her freshman year, Michelle worked on some really cool projects ranging from extracting her own DNA and growing yeast. Along with her classmates, Michelle worked on a yEvo project that took her and her classmates 20 weeks, which the goal of this project was to make the yeast cells grow stronger by adding drugs. Michelle consistently observed her yeast cells to grow and not let them die by adding a concentration that would be too much for the yeast cells. Outside of the lab Michelle also worked on getting her OSHA 10H general industry certificate. She also learned many biotech skills like pipetting and being a little more knowledgeable in the equipment in lab 126.
Currently Michelle just finished doing lab 3.A where she learned how to make LB broth and pour petri plates. Michelle kinda messed up on this lab when pouring but now she is 100% positive she won’t repeat those mistakes throughout future labs! Michelle is planning to work on lab 3.B where she hopes that she won’t mess it up and have to redo it! This lab Michelle is trying to prepare for will be using E.coli and testing its sensibility. A few labs Michelle is excited to work on in the future are labs 3.C and 3.F both of which are going to be new learning experiments for Michelle!
Outside of school Michelle’s hobbies are pottery clay, reading, playing volleyball, and traveling with her family! Michelle has lived her whole life in Tukwila, and she hopes to go to a 4 year college when she’s older. She is still not sure what to study yet in the future but she's thinking of going to law school as a possibility. Lastly she is a big food lover, always trying new local restaurants/bakeries that open up near seattle. But her mother’s cooking could never disappoint her as it is way more delicious than any other Mexican restaurant in town!
