Honey Suwanchote

Past Projects

Since her junior year of high school, she has been involved with the Biotech Club to provide opportunities and resources in the field of biotechnology to underrepresented youth.

With Mr. Renz's guidance and mentorship, Honey has had the opportunity to work at the Institute of Systems Biology (ISB) as a 2022 High School Summer Intern. In the Baliga Lab, Honey collaborated with her partner Zoe Kanter, and mentors Jake Valenzuela and Chris Deutsch. They researched on diatoms (photosythetic eukaryotes), where they conducted experiments to study the gene expression of the orthologs of T. pseudonana in future oceanic conditions, using techniques including growing diatoms, RT-qPCR, and R programming.

They have also assisted undergraduate student Kristine Prado-Casillas with her project, and shared their ideas upon developing a high school curriculum about resilience in ecological systems.

Current Projects

Honey is taking biology classes through Running Start at Highline Community College to further her interests in how biological molecules interact with each other, and with the world around us. Upon taking AP Biology with Mr. Renz, Honey along with her peer, hopes to publish a children’s book about Henrietta Lacks. She hopes to pursue Neuroscience at the University of Washington after she graduates, to further explore her career path.

Personal

Honey also participates in extracurriculars outside of science. She was in Girls Swim since her sophomore year of high school, and was Co-Captain her senior year. She was also a manager for Boys Swim, and is involved with her high school’s Leadership class. Honey finds art to be an outlet for stress and to let her creativity flow, leading her to be the Tukwila Art Commission’s Student Representative. As a way to document memories, she loves creating “mini vlogs” about her day to share with her family and friends.
