Esteban Bailon

Past Projects

Esteban has been involved in many previous experiments that have taken place in Renz Lab. Such labs would include DNA extraction, Gel Electrophoresis, and growing a yeast colony. As for the DNA extraction, Esteban extracted DNA from both a strawberry and also from a personal sample of saliva. Not only that but he was also able to successfully cultivate a yeast colony and adapt them to FungiCure. All of these labs were done from September 2021 to June 2022.

Current Projects

Some projects that Esteban is working or planning to work on are pouring LB and LBS Agar plates, Gram Staining, Quantifying Bacterial Numbers and much more. The expectations for pouring agar plates are to be able to calculate the amount needed for the LB mixture, and to properly pour the mixture into the petri dishes. For Quantifying Bacteria the goal is to determine the concentration of E.coli HB101 that is present in a culture by using the serial dilution and plate count method. As for Gram Staining the objective is to Gram Stain bacteria and observe it under a microscope. All of these projects will be performed in Renz Lab as well.

Personal

When Esteban was only one, he and his family moved from Lynwood, California to Tukwila, Washington. From there he attended Cascade View Elementary School, and then Showalter Middle School after. Now Esteban has recently started his journey as a 10th grader in Foster High School. Oftentimes he likes to spend his time doing hobbies such as playing video games and playing soccer with friends. In the future, Esteban has plans to attend UW as it is close to home.
