One of Chan Yun’s most outstanding past experiment is the yEvo project, in which she spent the majority of freshmen year focusing on in
Intro to Biotech class. She has shown outstanding efforts in this project and even helped others in their of pursuit of creating a drug resistant yeast. We can see this in her experiments where she has continuously subbed in for other lab mates, making their YPD media and dosing their yeast for them. Another highlight of past projects Chan has done last year is her argument on animal cruelty and testing. Chan has made some very interesting and thought-provoking points about the advancements that animal testing could bring into the world. However, Chan also emphasizes the fact that while animal testing is preferable to human testing, the animals corporality (The fact that they are alive), should also remind us to keep up with bioethical practices when it comes to handling animals in the future.
Chan Yun has recently completed Activity 3A of Chapter 3, which focused on preparing microbiological media. She is currently preparing for Lab 3B, where she will conduct a disk diffusion test. In the future, she aspires to perform Lab 2C, Kool-Aid chromatography, which she was unable to complete previously due to a shortage of materials. Additionally, she is also planning on taking a role in Lab Activity 4E, forensic DNA fingerprinting.
Chan Yun has a future aspiration to become a pharmaceutical biochemist. Since enrolling in the Intro to Biotech course, she has recognized her desire to pursue a career as a woman in STEM. She has made significant progress from her freshman to her sophomore year. This upcoming summer, she plans to participate in a program at the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center to broaden her scientific knowledge. Additionally, she also hopes to join PSSC’s Biomedical Summer School Program.
