The only other Biotech class Bailey has taken is Intro to Biotech, the class that precedes Advanced Biotech. They have previously done assignments involving electrophoresis, DNA extraction, and PCR. A project that was more individual and was more of an experiment, though, is the yEvo (Yeast Evolution) project that they did. They did this during Intro, over the course of a few months, with the intention of proving the hypothesis, "If the msh2d is supposed to have more mutations than the wild type, then at the end of the experiment the msh2d will have received a higher concentration of the drug than the wild type yeast." This experiment was unfortunately cut short, but they still made a few interesting discoveries during the project, including some that defied their expectations of how the experiment would go.
Currently, Bailey is working on the activities included in the third chapter of the Biotechnology: A Laboratory Skills Course textbook. They already completed activity 3.A, and are preparing to do 3.B and 3.C. In 3.A, they have made LB Broth, LB Agar, poured agar plates, made LBS Agar, and done a sterility test on a 100mm petri plate. They would like to work on activity 3.D―Gram Staining―because of how interesting it seems. They would also like to get to work on activities in the later chapters.
Bailey got here because they got Intro to Biotech instead of Honors Biology in freshman year, and ended up finding biotechnology more interesting than just biology. They've lived in Tukwila their whole life, going to Tukwila Elementary―where they developed a hatred for math, due to their fourth grade teacher, who cannot be named or else they will implode―and then Showalter Middle school, and finally getting to Foster. They hope to go to UW, despite witnessing them lose against WASU just a few weeks ago, and study paleontology, or possibly forensic anthropology. They enjoy reading murder mysteries, specifically the Hercule Poirot series by Agatha Christie, and Minecraft: Guide to: books. They also enjoy playing Pokemon games (B/W, Sw/Sh, S/V and hopefully US/UM in the future) and refusing to choose any starter Pokemon that isn't a water type.
