Angelina had joined “Intro to Biotech” in her freshman year. During that year, she had been exposed to many different lab equipment and was able to learn how to use some of them.
One of her biggest projects was the yEvo project. The yEvo project is a project that tested yeast mutations and adaptability to toxic environments. Her and her peers were assigned drug strains, these drugs were supposed to kill the yeast. She was also assigned two different types of yeast to keep track of. Over the course of 10-11 weeks, her yeast was tested in this drug, slowly increasing dosage. In the end of the project, Angelina was able to create a population of yeast that had mutations that allowed it to strive and survive in an environment they should not. Other than her yEvo project, Angelina has also done other experiments. She has extracted DNA, isolated bacteria and yeast colonies, and cloned DNA using PCR.
Angelina is a member of the “Advanced Biomedical Sciences” course offered at Foster High School. She had just started to pour agar plates in class. She had learned how to figure out measurements with math and is currently figuring out how to write in a lab notebook. She hopes to be able to do other big projects such as her yEvo. She also hopes to have her name on a science paper.
Angelina was born in Seattle, Washington and raised by immigrant parents from Vietnam. In her spare time, Angelina likes to listen to music, read, and watch movies or shows.
Angelina doesn’t have a specific course in mind, though she is thinking of pursuing a career that involves life science or medical science. Taking “Intro to Biotech” and “Advanced Biomedical Sciences” has definitely opened up her options in what she wants to pursue in the future.
