In this Unit, students write to teach others how to do or make something! Our students know how to do SO MANY THINGS. We encourage our young writers to write about things they do everyday like get ready for school, draw a favorite animal, or play a game. Students write their steps across the pages and label their pictures to give the reader more information.
We are writing in 3-5 page booklets. Check out our paper choices by clicking on the buttons below!
We use this checklist throughout the Unit to edit our writing. The goal of editing is not to make it perfect. Instead, our goal is to make it easy for the reader to read our writing. It is important that children become self-aware of their writing errors and make corrections when they understand why it is important.
Touch the page across the pages and say your story out loud.
Draw a quick sketch to help you remember what your words will be on that page.
Write the words to match the pictures!
While the time in each section may vary, the proportions do not. The bulk of our time is spent on independent writing which includes teacher conferences.
The workshop model emphasizes independent work time. We begin each lesson by introducing a new skill or strategy. Then the bulk of our time, students are immersed in independent writing. During this time, teachers engage students in; small group instruction, 1:1 conferences, and table conferences.
