Hazelbrook Middle School Scheduling and Schedule Change Policies and Procedures
The purpose of this document is to outline and describe the timelines and processes for making any changes to student schedules at Hazelbrook Middle school as it aligns with our district and school values.
Students need to wait until Monday, September 9th before signing up to see their Counselor to talk about their schedule.
In general, the only exceptions for schedule changes are as follows:
1. Student is missing a period in their schedule.
2. Student is missing a class and/or have 2 of the same classes (For example: "I have no math." or "I have two Social Studies classes."
3. Student is in the wrong class (For example: "I am a 7th grader but they have me in PE6." or "I am in 8th grade but my schedule says Math 7.")
What we believe:
At Hazelbrook Middle School we make every effort to organize and plan our schedules to create the best possible placement and environment for all students.
We value equity and inclusion. Our priority is to create equitable access to education for all students and we work hard to provide space and resources to help support student success.
Equitable means that everyone gets what they need to be successful. What each student needs is not always equal to other students. Some need more or less than others to find success. For this reason, we plan according to student and community needs.
Forecasting/Planning:
Planning, scheduling, and schedule changes are done in accordance with what will serve students best in an academic environment and for educational purposes only.
All students are given an opportunity in the spring to indicate which electives they would prefer to take the following school year. (This is called “Forecasting”) PLEASE CHOOSE CAREFULLY! Our schedule is built based on your course requests and availability.
Scheduling and schedule changes will be facilitated by school counselors while being supported and approved by the building administration.
Scheduling Processes and Schedule Changes:
Students can expect to see schedules in StudentVue sometime during the week before school starts.
It is possible that a student may receive electives for which they did not forecast. This may be due to limited space in classes or a schedule conflict that makes it impossible to fit a requested class into a student’s day. Course offerings may also change due to funding and available staff.
Once placed in a schedule, students will be expected to stay in these classes (and Hawk/Grade Level Team) and make every effort to be a member of the community in a safe, kind, and responsible way. If a student is unhappy with an elective class they have received they may sign up to speak to their counselor during the 2nd week of the semester but should understand that it is unlikely they will be able to change.
The schedule we create has limited flexibility and space for student movement and we will reserve those moves for situations that warrant it based on the following criteria:
Additional factors for consideration:
There is an academic benefit for the student or the school environment.
There is a clear mistake in the schedule or placement that needs correction.
There is a clear behavioral, social, emotional, or personal health concern as determined by a school team.
Changes will not be made:
To get a class with a preferred teacher
To align schedule with friends at school
To change to a specific lunch
To change unwanted electives
If conflict or difficulty with a particular class or teacher arises, the first place to start is to initiate a conversation between parents, students, and teachers. If the communication between the family and the parent fails or more support is needed, the family or teacher can reach out to counselors or administration for support.
In cases where there is a difficulty that arises, we value problem-solving, learning, and restorative conversations between teachers, students, and families first. We will seek to resolve problems and conflicts before we consider any schedule changes or moves.
Any changes that are made will be decided by the administration and the team.
