What is AVID?

AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is rooted in the belief that all students can succeed if they have the desire, tools, and opportunity to do so. In middle school, AVID is designed to help students prepare for and succeed in high school and college.

Students in AVID take a year-long elective class where they learn skills such as organization, public speaking, self-advocacy, note-taking, study skills, higher level questioning, and much more. Students also practice in collaborative groups led by tutors. These groups allow students to bring topics they are confused about from other classes, and then work through a group process of higher-order thinking skills to unlock understanding. Students also go on field trips to different colleges and vocational schools in the state.

Fowler has 2 AVID elective classes: 7th grade and 8th grade.

Who is AVID?

AVID students are capable of completing a college-prep curriculum but may be falling short of their potential. AVID targets C average students who have the potential to succeed in a rigorous academic course of study if given both the opportunity and support. Students are accepted to the program through an application and interview process. This elective is open to 7th and 8th grade students only.
