Reading: Authentic texts will be the basis for our Reading instruction. We will alternate between reading a whole class chapter book, and book clubs where students will read & discuss in groups based on their reading level & topics of interest. Comprehension strategies & story elements will be taught in the context of picture/chapter books. Students will learn about various genres and be challenged to read a variety of genres. "Awesome Authors" will be introduced throughout the year. We will have a Spelling test each Friday (linked to the week's phonics instruction). Every other Friday we will have a Vocabulary test (Greek/Latin Roots). I expect each student to read at least 20 minutes/day at home.
Writing: Students will engage in "Reading Like a Writer" (thorough examinations of high quality writing) and then have opportunities to try writing like what they have read. Students will study & write informational, persuasive, narrative, and poetry pieces. Students will be taught Grammar skills in the context of writing.
