Why high ability?

High ability (HA) program will provide a challenging, differentiated, yet fundamental program for students possessing high academic abilities.

High ability students often have special educational, emotional, and social needs that can be more succinctly met in a self-contained classroom designed just for them.

WHAT DOES A HIGH ABILITY CLASSROOM SETTING LOOK LIKE?

Students are taught grade-level standards; they participate in all school activities; they have homework just like all regular education students. The teaching methods and curriculum design are what are varied. Students will be presented material at an expedited rate that might not be possible in a self-contained same grade level dynamic.

HOW DO DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS LEARN IN THE SAME CLASS?

The curriculum for the 2/3 multi-age class is based not on age but rather on ability. Ability and capability for learning are the focal points. Therefore, the curriculum is mapped out using a two year cycle so that subject matter that is combined is not repeated.

HOW IS THE CURRICULUM DIFFERENTIATED FOR TWO GRADE LEVELS?

All students are taught grade level math using the IReady math curriculum. With reading, spelling, language, and social sciences, students are on that two-year cycle where content is alternated. With many projects and subject matter, where all student do the same assignment or produce the same kind of product, different grading rubrics and/or expectations are in place, whereby third graders are expected to perform or produce at a higher developmental level. Students can also be grouped according to academic level, interest level, or off grade level when the assignment or student need calls for it.
