Frequently Asked Questions

Does my student need speech therapy?

This question can be answered better following a speech or language screening or evaluation. All Kindergarteners are screened, but if a teacher or parent has a question or concern about an older student's communication abilities, they may request a screening by the speech pathologist. See the tab "Screening vs. Evaluation" under "What I Do" for more information about this process.

What does a speech therapist do?

See the tab, "What I Do" to answer that question!

If my child already has an IEP, will they continue to receive services when they start school at Mayflower?

Yes. If they are coming from a preschool in the area or are from another TSC school, it is quite a seamless process. If the previous school was out of the Tippecanoe School Corporation, then a move-in conference will be held to adjust the paperwork, but the student will continue to receive services once that is completed.

Will my child continue to have services during the summer?

Most students are not eligible to receive speech/language services during the weeks school is not in session. If it has been demonstrated that a significant decline in skills will take place, then some summer services may be written into the IEP.

My Kindergartener can't say certain sounds - is this normal?

It depends - some speech sounds develop later and not using them correctly is developmentally normal. Click HERE for a chart of speech sound norms.
