My name is Beth Hassenplug. I have been a teacher for over 18 years and love what I do! It took me several years to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up! I have twin boys who are now 23, time really does get quicker as we age! One works at Home Depot and the other one works for Force Tech installing all kinds of tech within Indiana and the surrounding states. I have three great bonus kiddos too! Matt, just got out of the Marines. He served over three years in Japan and will settle down in Austin, Texas. Kurt works at Wabash National. Leah is 11 years old and is in the 6th grade at Klondike! My "better half", Steve, and I do lots of fun and exciting things with robots and LEGOs. On the weekends and the summer you can see us running Super Robo Rally or displaying at Brick World Events. We also enjoy riding our recumbent trikes.
When I graduated from high school, I had NO idea what I wanted to do. I went to college for a year and decided it wasn't for me! So I took some classes at a trade school to become a dental assistant. I worked as an assistant for several years and my doctor sent me to I.U. Dental School to become an expanded assistant. This basically meant I could place fillings, as well as assist in preparing teeth for treatment. I loved what I was doing but I always felt like something was missing.
At the age of 27, I returned to Purdue University to get my bachelor's degree in elementary education. I then got pregnant with twin boys! So, I cut down my work load and went to school part time. This allowed me to focus on my boys! When the boys turned two, I was ready to finish up my schooling. In 2007, I graduated from Purdue University on the Dean's List!
My first classroom was a 5th grade class at Carroll Consolidated School in Flora, Indiana. I taught Language Arts in a departmentalized setting. I enjoyed my time there but was laid off (riffed) due to budget restraints and the lack of seniority. I worked as a maternity leave substitute for TSC and then taught music at Prairie Crossing in Oxford. Once again, I was laid off so I went and taught 5th grade at Sacred Heart in Fowler, Indiana. I taught at Sacred Heart for eight years. I then taught at South Newton for six years.
I love music! That is one reason why I switched from teaching general education to Music! Music became my community and huge part of my identity. For many, many years I have played piano, flute, ukulele, guitar, and piccolo. I even marched at Purdue! (Boiler Up!) My music has always been a great outlet for me! I also sang in many choirs and performed in dramas. I was active in Winter-Guard where I did rifles, sabers, and flags. I have played in several praise bands over the years. I also play at weddings and funerals.
Another thing I enjoy greatly is technology! I love to learn new things that involve tech! I really enjoy incorporating it into the classroom! Overall, I really enjoy the l enjoy the learning process.
