Reading
This week's vocab words are the kinds of text structures we are beginning to learn about:
sequence/chronological - text is in an order of events, like a timeline or recipe
description - this is the most common kind - teaches the reader about something
cause/effect - first gives events/causes, then the results/events
compare/contrast - the easiest one - gives similarities and differences
problem/solution - lays out an issue/problem, then gives suggestions for fixing (solutions)
TARGET SKILL: text structure, reading nonfiction for detail
We are continuing to work through our book club novels as well.
Math
We are starting basic long division this week. I teach it the way we learned in school. Students may be bringing home extra practice for reinforcement. If it doesn't show up this week, expect next week!
At least three times a week, I give out Mad Minute worksheets. Students have 5 minutes to answer 100 basic facts. They must pass:
1 mixed addition level
1 mixed subtraction level
1 mixed addition and subtraction
multiplication 2-12, as well as two mixed multiplication levels
division 2-12, as well as two mixed division levels
one "ultimate" worksheet with both multiplication and division.
If students get through all of their multiplication levels by December 11, they are invited to a pizza party with me.
