A little bit about me...
I am a die hard Ohio State fan, (even though my husband works for Purdue now!) We ALWAYS cheer on The Buckeyes! I graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Human Development and Family Science. I attended Ashland University, where I obtained a Master's degree in Education, focusing on Curriculum and Instruction and Literacy. I graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Doctoral degree in Education, with a dual focus on Early Childhood Education and Gifted Education. I am licensed to teach PreK-3, K-12 Reading and K-12 Gifted instruction. This is my 19th year teaching, and I have taught in the following areas: preschool, 1st grade, 2nd grade, 4th/5th Gifted, 6th, 7th & 8th Gifted Math, Reading Intervention, STEM coordination, and Birth-kindergarten in a Pediatric Hospital setting (cancer & heart transplant patients). I love teaching❤
When I am not at school, I enjoy...
Spending time with my family, I have two boys: Isaiah & Julius, and a grandson Cohen♥️
All things nature (exploring, hiking, boating, gardening, cultivating, bird watching, house plants)
Camping-I love sleeping under the stars in the peaceful quiet of nature, fresh air and cooking by fire!
Cooking & baking!
Traveling-my husband is a pilot and we love to explore different countries and cultures
Road tripping-I have been to 48 of the 50 states all by car (except Hawaii, of course!)
My go to comforts: coffee and chocolate
DIY-ing with my husband
OSU football
My favorite places to shop: Target and Amazon, or vintage stores/flea markets- I love a unique treasure and good deal!
My classroom is a safe and loving environment where children can be themselves and grow. Everyone is special and uniquely wonderful. Everyone has something to offer. I believe it is my responsibility to grow their talents and abilities, help them to develop critical AND creative thinking skills and positive self concepts. I will challenge them, provide logical consequences and many opportunities for productive struggle. In this classroom, they will learn to embrace their mistakes, see them as learning opportunities, and develop a growth mindset and attitude. Our classroom will operate in a democratic fashion, sharing decision making and responsibilities. Most importantly, we will explore, be curious, play, research, learn to be experts, artists, scientists, find our voice, and grow.
I strongly believe that when children are at home, it is their time to be kids, explore, create, play and most of all spend time with their family. Therefore, I won’t be assigning nightly worksheets for homework on skills covered in class. However, I strongly encourage students to log into their iReady or IXL accounts at home and complete lessons to further and extend their learning. 20 minutes of practice daily in these programs have shown significant growth in learning! Other optional ways to practice and extend learning at home: nightly reading, journaling (also great for handwriting practice!) and flash cards for math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
Grades shouldn’t be something that a child is stressing over. If they are learning and growing, they will receive “good grades.” I grade through observation, discussion, revisions, and final products. Mistakes are how we learn and get better, and do not need to be punitive at the elementary level. I also use self-reflection when grading and take into account the student’s effort, as well. Students are always able to revise and correct their errors for a higher grade. Students will receive a zero in the gradebook if an assignment is missing; however, their grade will be updated once it is turned in. I will accept late assignments without penalty, up until final grades are due.
The standard grading policy will be used:
A: 100-90
B: 89-80
C: 79-70
D: 69-60
F: 59 and below
Volunteers may be in the building outside of morning drop-off and dismissal hours. A background check is required and cost $18. If you plan to volunteer, please get the background check early, because it can take some time for the results to get back to the school.
Follow the instructions here to sign up to be a volunteer at KES/KIS.
Klondike Elementary students follow the Golden Rules for positive behavior. All students make good choices by showing:
We are responsible.
We are cooperative.
We are respectful.
We do what’s right (show integrity).
We do our best (perseverance).
Each month these expectations are taught and modeled for the students. Classroom teachers keep track of student behavior each day in the classroom, lunch, recesses, and in Specials. Teachers use this information to determine if any of the behavior expectations need further instruction for the class.
Positive Consequences:
Good As Gold tickets
Weekly classroom Nugget Award winners
Cooperative classroom-based incentives
Quarterly schoolwide Golden Ticket Jamboree
Regular positive contacts home
Negative Consequences:
Unexpected negative behaviors will be recorded as “Corrections” on the clipboard by the supervising teacher under the Golden rule that connects to the behavior.
Teachers will use strategies and logical consequences to address behavior and assist students in growing from the correction.
Students with 2 or more corrections for a day will receive a call, email, or note home to let parents know about the behaviors.
Students with 5 or more corrections for the day can lead to Office Discipline Referral.
Students who need additional assistance with their behavior will move to a Tier II or Tier III behavior program.
