Behavior Management Plan

This class will use Class Dojo and a tricked out spreadsheet to record positive and negative behavior and to communicate with parents

Students will be earning class parties, free time, and invitations to Fabulously Fun Friday.

My thoughts on awarding and deducting Class Dojo points

My rule of thumb is that I award 5 to 1 positive to negative points. I want to reinforce any helpful behavior in the classroom. For example I will give out points for asking a question, sharing with a neighbor, silent trips in the hallway. If points need to be taken away I try and target the student(s) responsible. Sometimes this is not possible and I must deduct points from the whole class. Usually this is in response the talking when silence has been asked for.

As the year starts the points will be in 1 or 2 point amounts but as the year goes on and your student should be a behavior master the amounts of points taken away will be larger. For example the students walk down the hallway silently. A student talks and I would deduct one point. Since it is the beginning of the year the point amount is small. By the end of September the deduction will be 5 points. It is an extremely basic expectation that students will walk through the halls in silence.

Consequences

In school, every second is precious! Misbehavior is a disruption that affects both my effectiveness as an educator and the efficiency of time used in class. The time spent dealing with misbehavior would be better spent teaching. Therefore, my goal is to deal with misbehavior quickly, consistently, and empathetically with the class defined consequences. Problems, conflicts, and disagreements provide teachable moments to model, encourage, and practice healthy decision making.

The following are the steps in the discipline plan for the classroom:

  • I will begin by using non-verbal communication, such as facial expressions, gestures, and eye contact. This will be used to promote self-control by the student.
  • When an inappropriate behavior is observed, I will simply say the rule being broken. The entire class will say the rule and we will continue on with the lesson.
  • Talking with the student privately. Sometimes all it takes to improve behavior is to discuss the problem. I do not wish to embarrass a child, so a private conversation may be necessary.

When these things fail the following appropriate consequences will be used:

* Points will be taken away on Class Dojo

*The student will be asked to sit someplace else in the classroom

* If problems are not corrected, direct parental contact will be made through email or by telephone.

* Final Action: Referral to the principal and Parent-Teacher Conference will be set.

*Physical violence and bullying and not tolerated in the classroom.

In the case of physical violence or bullying, the child will be immediately taken to the office.
