Behavior Expectations
Try your best!
Be kind!
Daily Home-School Folder
Your child will have a daily home-school folder. Each pocket of the folder is marked with a label, one for items to return to school, and the other for items that can be kept at home. Here is what you can expect to find in each of these pockets.
Return to School Pocket
Behavior Sheet and Newsletter: Students will have a weekly assignment sheet that you need to sign each night. There is also a comment section for you to write me notes if you need to. Also, please feel free to email or call me with any questions.
Keep at Home Pocket
In this pocket you will find any completed/graded/checked work that may be left at home. You will also find other general information in this pocket. Please empty this side of your child’s folder each night. This helps keep students organized, and you informed of their progress. A great way to support your child’s learning is to go over their mistakes on daily assignments.
Individual Behavior
I have a mini-economy system in my room. Students will be paid for completing homework each day. They can also earn money for various reasons throughout the day. They will be able to use this money to purchase items from my classroom store every other Friday or save their money to buy more expensive/desired items in the future.
Students can also lose their money by not doing homework, classwork, or making poor choices at school. If a student owes money for breaking an expectation and does not have any money, then they will owe a lap at 2nd recess or go home with a Fix-It ticket. Fix-It tickets are sent home for families to talk with their child about what expectation they broke, and this needs to be signed and returned the next day.
I will also have a class reward system where if the whole class is doing well working and/or following school expectations then the class earns a star. Students will vote on a class reward and the amount of stars it will take to earn this.
It is my hope that the mini-economy approach to setting a positive climate in my classroom will promote positive behavior and is a start to teaching students about money. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Homework
Your student will have homework most nights during the week. Homework is not meant to be a stressful time at home, but a way to help them practice the skills we are learning. Please let me know if homework is becoming a stressful time so that we can come up with a solution.
AR Reading: Students will bring home a book to read for AR Monday through Thursday. They need to read this book and return it the next day to take an AR quiz when they get to school.
Fluency Passage: On Mondays, students will bring home a colored piece of paper with their weekly Fluency passage on it. They are to read this passage to an adult every evening, have the adult initial it, answer the questions by themselves, and turn in on Fridays. The last question MUST be answered in a complete sentence. These are worth 8 points each week. Even if a student is absent or we have a short week, they MUST read it 4 times during the week.
Phonics Practice: Each week we will be learning a new phonics skill. We will send home a list that has examples of the rule we are learning. Students should be practicing the phonics rule in the words, not necessarily memorizing the words on the list. You do not need to turn in this list.
Super Words Practice: Students will get a practice page for their weekly Super Words. This is due at the end of each week. Students will be expected to be able to write these words correctly on Friday.
Unfinished Work: At times, you will also find a worksheet that needs to be completed at home. This could be incomplete classwork assignments or extra practice to do at home. Any work on the return to school side is due the next day. If it is late the grade will be reduced by 10%.
Fix and Return Assignments: Students that receive a 60% or below on classwork or homework will have “fix” at the top of the page. Please go over these mistakes with your child and have him/her return the corrected work the next day. Corrected assignments are the responsibility of the student.
Incomplete Classwork
If a student has unfinished classwork before 2nd recess, then they will work on the classwork during our grade level recess time in the afternoon. If the classwork is still incomplete after working during 2nd recess then the work will go home and is due the next school day.
Late Work
Students that turn in late work will have a 10% reduction of their grade.
Snack
A snack calendar will go home at the beginning of each month. Please send in snack on the day that your student’s name is listed. Snacks do not need to be prepackaged, but can be if you choose. PLEASE do not send in cupcakes or sweets for a snack. Crackers, pretzels, fruit snacks, Veggie Straws, etc. are great examples of snacks to send in!
Birthdays
We celebrate birthdays in the classroom. If your child has a summer birthday, please set a time up with me, so we can celebrate here at school, too. Your child is welcome to bring in an individually wrapped snack for each student. These snacks must be store bought and prepackaged. It is helpful if the snack is not a cake or anything that needs to be sliced. If your child is having a birthday party outside of school, I ask that you please do not send invitations for your child to pass out at school, unless they are inviting all the boys and/or girls in the class. As always, please communicate any special circumstances with me.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast is available for all students on full days of school. I will ask the students each day if they would like to have breakfast for the next day at school. Please let me know if you do not want your child to have breakfast at school.
Students will have a choice every day of a hot or cold lunch. Students will be responsible for making their lunch choice every morning and remembering what they chose for lunch. Lunch calendars will be viewable on the Woodland website each month.
Accelerated Reader-A.R.
The Accelerated Reader program is very important in your student’s journey towards being an outstanding reader. Students are expected to take one AR quiz every day over a book that he/she read. If students have not taken a quiz by second recess, they will be expected to read during their recess time. We will have rewards at the end of each nine weeks. Students have to meet their point and/or percentage goal in order to participate in the rewards at the end of each quarter. I strongly encourage you to have your child read for 20 minutes each night at home. This will greatly impact your child’s success in the classroom.
