Evaluation of Pupil Progress
Mrs. Jessica Baker
First Grade Battle Ground Elementary School
All grades will be recorded, using formative and summative assessments and progress monitoring. They will be given equal value and averaged at the end of each nine-week grading period. The TSC percentage scale is: A = 100% - 90%; B = 89% - 80%; C = 79% - 70%; D = 69% - 60%; and F = 59% and below. Students are expected to complete classroom work daily and will be evaluated on such. If a student is absent, he/she will be required to make up the work within three days according to the School Board Attendance Policy. When a student misses school, his/her grade may be jeopardized because the classroom learning experience and environment cannot be recreated by assignments made up at home. Remote Learning participation is of the utmost important, if needed.
Reading & Literature: Students will be graded and assessed upon all Indiana Standards using our Language Arts Curriculum Mapping Guide (copy will be in the principal’s office) using skills papers, workbook pages, tests, and oral assessments. Reading lessons in fiction and non-fiction, using first grade on-level comprehension skills, strategies, and vocabulary will be assessed weekly and placed under Reading & Literature. Children will be continually instructed at grade level and at their independent reading level development. Vocabulary (with content specific words) and Foundations (Phonics and Fluency) will also be assessed in this area. Reading and Words to Know (read not spell) grades will be taken on most Fridays of each week.
Language Arts: Students will be assessed in The Writing Process, Conventions of Standard English, and in Spelling. The Writing Process will be created with a scope and sequence instruction using the 6 Traits and Smekens Writing Modules. Writing grades will be reflected on each quarter’s report card. Students (through a scope and sequence) will demonstrate conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. The skills developed in this area will be to recognize and use nouns, possessives, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, and prepositions. A language test through dictation will be given each week. Additionally, a spelling test will be given each week. Handwriting grades will also be included in this area. Finally, writing pieces and projects (alternative assessments) will be scored using a rubric.
Math: Students will be instructed and evaluated on Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Measurement and Data, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Computation, and Geometry. Grades will be based on worksheets, returned weekly homework, and written and oral tests. A fluency addition program will be incorporated and assessed on the strategy taught as well.
Science, Social Studies, & Health: Each discipline will be individually assessed. Students will be introduced and assessed quarterly by a participatory grade in the classroom. IDEA has a monthly science lesson encompassing the STEM philosophy. Science is also taught using Mystery Dough, Discovery programs, and Scholastic News. Social Studies units (History, Civics/Government, Geography, and Economics) will be introduced and assessed in participation through the TSC adopted curriculum: Scholastic News & Writing Projects. Health units will be integrated throughout the school year.
Subjective Grading: All subjects will allow for subjective grading. A student may earn a slightly higher grade than the grading scale calculates based on other factors such as: cooperation in group work, timeliness, neatness, effort, leadership, improvement, responsibility, proper handling of materials, attitude, and preparedness.
