Pupil Progress Evaluation

Grade Two

A student must be working at or above grade level in any subject to receive an A grade. All grades and percentages are based upon the Tippecanoe School Corporation grading scale.

The grading scale is as follows:

Mastery = 100% - 90% - A

Approaching Mastery = 89% - 80% - B

Developing Mastery = 79% - 70% - C

Needs Time to Master = 69% - 60% - D

59% - 0% - F

*Note- All percentages and grades are given on work related to the Common Core Standards for each subject. A complete list of the Common Core Standards for each subject can be found at the end of this document.

Reading – (Literature K-5; Informational Text K-5; Foundational Skills)-

Mastery:

1. The student should score 90 – 100% on class work related to the Reading

Common Core Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work should be completed on time and with consistent accuracy.

3. The student should be reading fluently and with expression at or above grade level.

4. The student should be able to sound out new words with little or no difficulty.

5. The student should show an accurate level of comprehension of stories both verbally and

2. Daily work should be completed on time and with accuracy most of the time.

3. The student should be reading with fluency and with an attempt to use expression.

  3. The student infrequently recognizes basic sight words.
  4. The student has some trouble understanding the stories and exhibits some effort in the reading lesson.

1. The student scores 69% - 00% on class work related to the Reading

Common Core Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work is inaccurate and/ or is late most of the time.

3. The student does not use phonetic skills to sound out new words.

4. The student does not recognize basic sight words.

5. The student has trouble understanding the stories and exhibits some effort in the

reading lesson.

Language Arts, Writing, & Speaking & Listening-

Mastery:

1. The student should score 90 – 100% on class work related to the Language Arts and Writing

Common Core Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work should be completed on time and with consistent accuracy.

3. The student exhibits accurate use and understanding of writing process skills and

applications.

4. The student accurately uses Language Conventions with little or no difficulty.

5. The student exhibits excellent listening and speaking skills. Students will be given the score of

4 (four) indicating mastery

Approaching Mastery:

1. The student should score 89% - 80% on class work related to the Language Arts and

Writing Common Core Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work should be completed on time and with accuracy most of the time.

3. The student exhibits accurate use and understanding of writing process skills and

applications most of the time.

4. The student uses Language Conventions with little or no difficulty most of the time.

5. The student exhibits excellent listening and speaking skills most of the time. Students will be

given the score of 3 (three) indicating approaching mastery.

Developing Mastery:

1. The student should score 79% - 70% on class work related to the Language Arts and Writing

Common Core Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work is completed on time and with accuracy some of the time.

3. The student exhibits accurate use and understanding of writing process skills and

applications some of the time.

4. The student uses Language Conventions with little or no difficulty some of the time.

5. The student exhibits excellent listening and speaking skills some of the time. Students will be

given the score of 2 (two) indicating developing mastery.

Needs Time to Master:

1. The student should score 69% - 00% on class work related to the Language Arts and Writing

Common Core Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work is not completed on time and with accuracy.

3. The student does not exhibit accurate use and understanding of writing process skills and

applications.

4. The student does not use Language Conventions with little or no difficulty.

5. The student does not exhibit excellent listening and speaking skills. Students will be given the

score of 1 (1) indicating needs time to master.

Mathematics- (Operations & Algebraic Thinking; Number & Operations in Base Ten; Measurement & Data; Geometry-

Mastery:

1. The student scores 90 – 100% on the Common Core Mathematics Standards listed on the

second grade progress report.

2. All daily work is accurate and completed on time.

3. The student can work addition and subtraction problems without the use of fingers or

other counting devices.

4. The student demonstrates an accurate understanding of all concepts presented through

verbal and written work.

5. The student displays consistent effort to solve math problems both written and oral.

Approaching Mastery:

1. The student scores 80 – 89% on class work related to the Common Core Mathematics

Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work is turned in on time and is accurate most of the time.

3. The student can work addition and subtraction problems, though he/she many use

counters most of the time.

4. The student understands most concepts presented and demonstrates this through verbal

and written work.

5. The student uses effort to solve math problems both written and oral most of the time.

Developing Mastery:

1. The student scores 79% - 70% on class work related to the Common Core Mathematics

Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work is inaccurate, unfinished, and/or late frequently.

3. The student frequently uses counters to work addition and subtraction problems.

4. The student understands some concepts presented and demonstrates this through verbal

and written work.

5. The student sometimes exhibits effort to solve math problems both written and oral.

Needs Time to Master:

1. The student scores 69% - 00% on class work related to the Common Core Mathematics

Standards listed on the second grade progress report.

2. Daily work is inaccurate, unfinished, and/or late most of the time.

3. The student must use counters to work addition and subtraction problems.

4. The student has difficulty understanding new concepts that are presented. This would be

evident in both verbal and written work.

5. The student exhibits little or no effort to solve math problems both written and oral.

Social Studies, Science, and Health:

In the second grade, much of the content of these subjects are presented in a group discussion or

as a group project. Therefore the grading will be based on the following:

  1. Participation in class projects, investigations, and discussions.
  2. Enthusiasm for class projects.
  3. Ability to work co-operatively in groups.
  4. Completion of individual projects, such as a diorama, looking something up in an

Encyclopedia, reference book, or on the internet and reporting on it.

  1. Scores on completed assignments.

Mastery:

1. The student scores 100% - 90% on class work.

2. The student listens to and contributes during the group discussion. He/she volunteers

information or participates when asked.

3. The student contributes ideas to a group project and be able to work cooperatively on it.

4. The student does individual projects willingly, puts time and thought into the projects and

turns them in neatly and on time.

5. The student completes worksheets neatly, on time, and with accuracy.

Approaching Mastery:

1. The student scores 89% - 80% on class work.

2. The student listens to and contributes during the group discussion most of the time.

He/she volunteers information or participates most of the time.

3. The student contributes ideas to a group project and is able to work cooperatively on it

most of the time.

4. The student does individual projects, puts time and thought into the projects and

turns them in neatly and on time most of the time.

Common Core Standards

Language Arts

Literature K-5 (RL) - Read independently for meaning to identify main ideas and key details. This includes: story elements, meaning of words and phrases, common types of texts point of view, connections between texts and illustrations, compare and contrast within text, and central themes.

Informational Text K-5 (RI) - Read independently to identify main idea and topics. This includes making connections between texts, determining meaning of words, investigating text features, understanding point of view, using illustrations to understand the text, finding evidence within the text, and integrating information.

Foundational Skills (RF) - Develop grade level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words to read with accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. This includes print concepts and phonological awareness (K-1), fluency, word recognition, and word study (spelling practice pages).

Writing (W) - Develop pieces of writing that reflect development growth using strong vocabulary, grammar, and organization of ideas. Types of writing include: opinion pieces, informative texts, narratives, and short research projects.

Speaking & Listening (SL) - Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussion (one on one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade level topics and texts.

Language (L) - Demonstrate command of Standard English grammar and usage. This includes: conventions, word choice, grade level vocabulary, spelling word tests, and word relationships as tools to teach audiences.

Math

Operations and Algebraic Thinking- Represents and solves problems involving addition and subtraction within 20. Uses the foundation of multiplication using equal groups.

Numbers and Operations in Base Ten- Uses place value and properties of operations to add and subtract.

Measurement and Data- Measure and estimate lengths in standard units and adds and subtracts these lengths. Applies the concept of time and money. Represent and interpret data.

Geometry- Reasons with shapes and their attributes.
