Calm Corner

Purpose

The purpose of the calming corner is to provide for individuals to regulate in the classroom. It is a safe space to breathe, move or redirect thoughts. The calming corner allows individuals to get out of the amygdala and back to the prefrontal cortex.

Why Use a Calming Corner

• Heightened baseline of arousal

• Decreases volume in the hippocampus and corpus callosum

• More neural connections associated with fear and anxiety

• Lowers serotonin

• Fewer and shorter dendrites

• How we think and our capacity to think

Things to Put In Calming Corner

• 90 second timer

• Space to sit or lay down

• Pillow/Bean Bag (comfort is key)

• Fidgets

• Breathing Options
