Classroom Discipline

This year I will be following the Conscious Discipline framework created by Dr. Becky Bailey. This program was created to be “brain smart”, meaning it is based off of brain research and how to positively react and teach students appropriate behavior. This program focuses on meeting each individual child’s behavioral needs, teaching students how to communicate and resolve conflict, and creating a classroom community, which you’ll hear us refer to as our class family. The program is taught by using life values and social skills. These skills are interdependent of one another and are taught at the same time.

7 Essential Life Values:

7 Basic Social Skills:

These values and skills will be taught gradually throughout the year during our community circle and reinforced throughout the day with noticing. In addition, student’s will be asked to make a daily commitment. There are seven (7) we use within our first-grade classroom.

1.        I will use kind words.

2.      I will use gentle hands.

3.       I will use watching eyes.

4.       I will use listening ears.

5.      I will use walking feet.

6.      I will have a calm body.

7.       I will keep myself safe.

Even though we have an extra focus on positive behavior choices, that does not mean that students will not have consequences for poor choices. Students will be given a logical consequence for their actions. Conflict in our classroom will be used as a teachable moment to address our values and skills and problem solve how to fix them. Any student conflict that happens at school will be solved at school. I will be sending home daily behavior sheets just to keep an open line of communication about everyday minor occurrences (not following directions, etc.). For more serious behavior issues, I will contact you directly via phone, email, or through Remind.

If your child mentions something at home that you feel I need to be made aware of or address, please contact me. Communication between us will show the students that we are all part of their educational journey.

In our community circle will begin with the skills composure and encouragement the first few weeks of school. We will create a close community in our classroom that we will call our school family. We will complete many bonding activities, some will need some home support. I will be teaching the importance of communicating our feelings with our teachers and peers. Students will be taught how to be encouragers, support one another, be helpful, and taking responsibility for their actions. Starting in mid-September we will focus on one value/skill a month.

Classroom Communication

This year Room 6 will use Remind as a primary form of communication between the parents and the teacher. Use the information provided below to join our Remind classroom group. Through this app, I will be sharing reminders and important messages, as well communicating about behavior, etc.
