Third Grade is a Big Year for Reading! With the IREAD3 test this year, it is crucial to have a time each evening/morning for your child to read; individually or with you is acceptable. Creating an "AFTER SCHOOL CHECKLIST" has been extremely helpful for our family. The expectation by May of 3rd grade is for each third grader to read 110 words per minute with zero errors, and to be reading at or above a 4.0 reading level. If your child is able to do this, it is highly likely he/she will pass the IREAD3 test. If the IREAD3 test is not passed, children must attend 3 weeks of summer school & retake the IREAD3 test. If the child still does not pass the test, he/she will most likely be retained. The best way to become a better reader is to read.
Each 9 weeks your child will have a reading goal. I encourage you to keep on top of this goal by setting small weekly goals that will help your child reach the final 9-week goal.
