Our classroom runs off a level system and five basic rules: 1) Be safe, 2) Be Cooperative, 3) Be Respectful, 4) Be Responsible, 5) Be Peaceful. These rules have been established to ensure the learning environment remains productive and calm throughout the day!
Overview
Room 5 will use a behavior system based on a consistent rewards and consequences system. It will promote the acquisition of appropriate actions and responses that students need to interact and succeed in their school environment and the community. We will use daily point sheets to communicate and document behavior. Parents will be notified daily of overall points as well as any behaviors of praise or concerns through their Communication Logs in the take-home binders. Students’ performance will be compiled into both a tracking spreadsheet and used for student IEP goals as it pertains to the individual.
Purpose
Each student’s choice will be systematically met with either a reward or a consequence. Through consistency in expectations and outcomes, each student learns the impact of their own positive and negative choices. As positive behavior increases and the student shows consistency in behavior, they gain access to more opportunities and general education peers. As negative behaviors take place, the student experiences the designated consequences. Through this consistency, the student builds an understanding of expected outcomes as aligned to their actions.
Goal
The goal that every student works toward is to gain the necessary social skills to spend time with their homeroom class. Integration with their homerooms begins on Level 3 with direct support staff attending those times with them. Each student will be integrated at their own pace to ensure success at that level. All integration begins slowly with one class of the student's choice to ensure interest at that time. Students can work up toward more time or classes with their homerooms by demonstrating success and productivity with academics and behavior in those new settings. As students level up to 4 and 5, they begin to attend their homeroom class with less adult support.
Leveling Up
To level up, you must earn the specified points below in a given 3-week period:
Level 1: 80% of points (600)
Level 2: 85% of points (637)
Level 3: 90% of points (675)
Level 4: 95% of points (712)
Level 5: 95% of points per week (237/250)
Every day, students have the opportunity to earn up to 50 points. In one week, there is an opportunity for up to 250 points. Students have the opportunity to earn up to 750 points in the 3 weeks that data is collected. Points are adjusted for missed days of school. Additionally, students may have a point or green day target set for them to level up within the 3 weeks. For example, students in Fourth and Fifth Grade are given a daily point goal based on their current behavior. If they hit that point goal for 3 out of the 5 days or 4 out of the 5 days, depending on the student, they can level up at the end of each week. Students in Kindergarten through Third Grade are given a weekly target for 3 out of 5 green days or 4 out of 5 green days, depending on the student. All targets are tracked on students’ point sheets during each week. This policy adds more immediate reinforcement for positive behavior during the 3 week period!
