HTHS Engineering Academy

The Hewitt-Trussville Engineering Academy was founded in 2008 at Hewitt-Trussville High School in Trussville, Alabama. The Academy utilizes the Project Lead The Way Curriculum which is a nationally recognized engineering curriculum for High School Students. Over 200 students are enrolled each year in the HTHS Engineeering Academy courses. Students can take up to five different Engineering Academy courses that focus on teaching problem solving utilizing the engineering design process.

The Hewitt-Trussville Engineering Academy prepares students for the increasing technological demands of the global environment. The students enrolled in this program utilize math, science, technical writing, and computer skills as they explore different areas of engineering. This program serves as a platform for students who wish to pursue an engineering or technical degree after high school.

Students work as a team, utilizing the latest engineering software to design products and solve problems. Students develop their problem solving skills as they progress through the curriculum. The program is structured to meet the needs of regional, state and local industries.

"PLTW Engineering is more than just another high school engineering program. It is about applying engineering, science, math, and technology to solve complex, open-ended problems in a real-world context. Students focus on the process of defining and solving a problem, not on getting the "right" answer. They learn how to apply STEM knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to make the world a better place through innovation.

PLTW students have said that PLTW Engineering influenced their post-secondary decisions and helped shape their future. Even for students who do not plan to pursue engineering after high school, the PLTW Engineering program provides opportunities to develop highly transferable skills in collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, which are relevant for any coursework or career" (Project Lead the Way).
