Short Answer Questions

Short Answer Questions:

They are not the same as essays, but they still require the same amount of detail as an essay!

There are three parts to a SAQ, and each part should include a response that is about three detailed sentences. You can only respond in 23 lines, or about one side of one sheet of loose leaf paper. Your responses should resemble the example below.

  • A) (3 detailed sentences)
  • B) (3 detailed sentences)
  • C) (3 detailed sentences)

How do I write three detailed sentences? Try using the acronym A.C.E. to improve your writing!

  • A: Answer the question or prompt in your first sentence. Get the point, make the claim, and make sure to back up your claim with real evidence in the next sentence.
  • C: Cite evidence! Bring in a key term or a historical example in your second sentence to qualify your response in your first sentence. Students will not likely earn credit if their claim is not supported with factual evidence.
  • E: Explain your answer! Think about the broader significance of your responses in your first two sentences. What is the broader impact on history? What did your response result in or lead to in history? Essentially your final response will answer the question of, "So what?"
