The city of Trussville was founded on the idea that education was vital in developing our society and growing our economy. In the 1860s, Trussville was already a leader in educational achievement. Almost 84% of the population was literate. In 1869, Dr. Robert Green Hewitt, known in Trussville as, "the father of education," established the first school called the Trussville Academy. Graduates from the school went on to take prominent positions in Trussville and the surrounding areas. In 1938, our school opened as Hewitt High School in honor of Dr. Hewitt (Lloyd 2014). Over the years, Trussville has continued its legacy as a leader in education. Our reputation has attracted many families to locate here. Rapid growth and development made it necessary to build more elementary schools to accommodate the growing population. So the building once known as Hewitt High School was renovated, new additions were added, and the name was changed to Cahaba Elementary School. At Cahaba Elementary School we continue to honor Dr. Hewitt and the city of Trussville's legacy as a school of educational excellence.
At Cahaba Elementary School, we understand that education is at the root of a developing community and growing economy and that STEM professions are the driving force that run and improve our society and economy. Therefore, we are dedicated to teaching STEM and 21st century skills to all students. We foster safe and equitable learning environments where students are free to ask questions, explore, and create. We utilize a variety of technology and tools and provide authentic real-world experiences that expose students to STEM professions. We are preparing our students to solve the problems of the future and to hold jobs that do not yet exist. We do this so that our students are prepared to engineer the future of innovation. We do this to continue our legacy.
