Students write in their assignment pads every morning and are expected to always take home and bring back this pad AND their blue wolf folder.
Their wolf folder will contain new homework, announcement flyers, notes from the teacher/office, corrected work, and other important information that needs to be checked daily!
Some Ongoing Homework Trends:
Reading: Students should be reading for twenty minutes for at least 20 days a month.
Math: Typically, math homework (1-2 pages from their math workbook) is sent home every weeknight. Students need to make sure they remember to write their names at the top! Practice your math facts via XtraMath or other methods.
Writing: Writing homework *typically* isn't given; however, if a child does not work efficiently during our writers' workshop, he/she will need to continue writing this piece at home to stay on target with our class pacing!
Science/Social Studies: Sometimes, an accompanying handout will be given. Check those wolf folders! Social Studies projects will be explained and sent home, too.
Our Classroom Homework Policy:
I have the mindset that homework does help students practice skills learned during the day; however, I also realize that assistance from home is given! I base homework grades off of effectiveness and effort:
Check Plus: Student visibly put a significant amount of effort into the assignment, and most/all answers are correct.
Check: Student visibly put effort into the assignment, and some/most of the answers are correct.
Check Minus: Student missed several sections of the homework piece, and no/some answers are correct.
I believe homework helps students practice individual responsibility and accountability! This, to me, is the main advantage of homework. I want my students leaving second grade being responsible for completing their individual work, and accountable for handing it in. Please help me with this by passing such homework responsibilities over more to your child. :)
Homework Alerts will be given if a homework is incomplete/not turned in. This is just a notice to you, as parents, so we are in a constant line of communication for your child!! Homework is an important responsibility, and I want students to know that!
Homework Passes:
If a student completes every homework assignment in a given month (I keep this data!), he/she will receive a free homework pass!
A homework pass may be used on any full night's work of homework, excluding projects, studying for tests/quizzes/other assessments, or any other longterm assignment.
Absent Policies:
If absent, the child is responsible for turning in the homework of the last day he/she was in school when he/she returns.
When the child returns, I will give him/her any work that needs to be made up (if any). The most important thing is that your child feels better; accommodations for illnesses can be made!
