Writing Overview

Welcome to third grade writing! Our goal is to engage students through the writing process so that each student will see himself/herself as a writer.

Students will work in three genres of writing: Narrative, Informational, and Opinion.

Students will understand that:

  • writing is a process and each component has importance.

  • writers set goals for their writing and work to meet them.

  • writers write for specific audiences.

  • writers generate ideas from their own experiences and the writing of others.

  • writers work to increase their volume and stamina.

  • writers reflect on their writing.

  • writers apply language conventions consistently.

Key writing vocabulary: generating ideas, drafting, revising, editing, publishing, stamina, mentor text, small moment, storyteller's voice, reporter's voice, dialogue, share, claim, evidence.

Handwriting: Students learn cursive writing, not in abc order, but by letter formation groups. We learn loop letters, 2 o'clock letters, and up & down letters.
