The Mineral Ridge Historical Society started collecting artifacts and researching information for Mineral Ridge and its surrounding areas in 2003. We became incorporated in 2007 and a non-profit 501c3 in 2016. Our organization has helped the Moss Ancestral Home with their open houses since about 2005. In March of 2022, Mary Lou Godleski, owner of the Moss Ancestral Home, purchased the house and land across the street from her historical home for additional parking and to help the Mineral Ridge Historical Society store and showcase their artifacts and information. The society pays the utilities while Mary Lou owns the home at 1476 Burnett St. She has owned and been restoring the Moss Ancestral Home at 1499 Burnett St. for over 30 years. As of December 2022 we are in the process of reorganizing our meeting days and times. The new home of our artifacts will be opening spring of 2023.
The Moss Ancestral Home has a gravel driveway and grassy parking areas. There are steps in the front and back of the house, however, there is a lower level without steps. The Mineral Ridge Historical Society Showcase has a combination of paved parking and grassy parking. There are 2 steps between ground and porch and has a railing on both sides of the steps. There are bathrooms at both locations but not handicap accessible.
The Moss Ancestral Home, a Pennsylvania bank style house, was built in the 1830's by the Dunlap family. The house was sold shortly after it was built to the Burnett family. The Burnett family lived there about 20 years and sold it soon after the discovery of black band ore in Mineral Ridge. Some Cleveland companies had already been coal mining in the area and on Burnett St. when the Burnett family sold the house and land to the Rice, French & Chamberlain and Company of Cleveland. The Cleveland company then sold the house to Jacob Moss, Mary Lou Moss Godleski's great-great grandfather, who lived there from 1859 to 1899. After his death, the house was sold to the Stouffer family who lived at the Moss the longest. Elmer and Hiram Stouffer were involved in the Mineral Ridge Manufacturing Company and had patents on a few of the items manufactured there. When Mary Lou Godleski found the home, it was condemned but convinced the Board of Health that she could restore it. She purchased the house in 1990 and has been restoring it ever since.
