Biology is a foundational science that studies life in its many, many forms. Life on earth, from our cellular functions to global ecosystems has predictable patterns based on fundamental concepts. In addition to biological concepts, scientific skills such as experimentation, data collection/analysis, and laboratory techniques are practiced, with an emphasis on the basic scientific skill of inquiry, which can be applied to all areas of science and life. The advanced placement course will revisit previous topics, but also achieve a deeper knowledge than the traditional course. This will be accomplished through:
involved laboratory exercises
the use of multiple scientific skills in assignments
content mastery assignments
preparation of and completion of the AP exam
independent exploration of topics in Biology.
Natural Selection
Ecology
Chemistry of Biology
Cellular Structure and Function
Cell Communication
Cellular Metabolism
Gene Expression
Heredity and Genetics
An independent topic of your choosing
For information on essential skills and specific scientific content for each subject, see the "What will I learn?" document.
Graded assessments will take many forms. Short and long-term projects, poster presentations, group activities including multi-component lab reports, and traditional tests and quizzes will be used. Students will show their learning through writing, drawing, oral communication, graphing, and multimedia representations including models, diagrams, and videos.
Summative grades will be based on proficiency scales for each assignment.
Course grades will be based on completion of graduation (skill) and content standards assessed in summative assignments. Content standards are addressed by Unit Exams that involve both Multiple Choice and Free Response Questions. Skill standards are assessed through summative labs or projects with an emphasis on specific skills such as communication or experimentation.
See the detailed Syllabus for general policies including how to turn in work, homework procedures, and class rules.
