IMPORTANT INFO ABOUT COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS
Toms River High School North strides to guide students to become the best they can be, both in and out of the classroom. That is why we encourage Mariners to give their time in helping make the Toms River Community the best it can be. Students are not required to earn certain community service hours for graduation. However, serving one's community helps students become the best version of themselves while also allowing the community to grow and flourish.
SPIRIT OF THE MARINER COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD
Students who receive 40 hours or more of logged hours of community service each high school academic year (June to May) will be invited to attend the Community Service Breakfast. This event honors those civic-minded students where they receive the Spirit of the Mariner Award. Seniors who log 160 hours or more of community service over their high school career receive a cord to wear for graduation.
WHY SHOULD STUDENTS VOLUNTEER?
Volunteering benefits the student and the community. Volunteering helps a student stand out when applying for colleges, scholarships and future employment. Volunteering fosters personal growth and provides a sense of purpose and fulfillment beyond personal gains. It serves as an example to younger students that building community creates a better experience for all.
HOW DO I LOG MY COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS?
For school/club based service hours, students will use a community service log card. The log card will record the name of the activity, the date of the activity, and the hours for the activity. Log cards must be signed by your activity advisor. Log cards can be picked up in the Guidance Office and the Main Office. Log cards are to be submitted to the Community Service box in Guidance.
For community service activities done with outside of school organizations (IE: Church, Scouts, etc) students must turn in a letter that includes the same information that would have been included on the log card. The letters should be on the organizations letter head and signed by an official of the organization. The letters can be submitted to the Community Service box in Guidance also.
HS NORTH COMMUNITY SERVICE LOG SHEET
REMEMBER: IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY, NOT THE ADVISOR'S, TO LOG AND TURN IN THE STUDENT'S HOURS.
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF COMMUNITY SERVICE?
Volunteering is simply giving one's time without the expectation of receiving anything in return and only with the goal to help the people or organization concerned. There are numerous volunteering opportunities, examples include cleaning up the beach, raising money to help cure an illness, or spending time at an animal hospital.
WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES THAT ARE NOT CONSIDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE?
A good question to always ask when it comes to community service and if your hours can be applied to volunteering is this: "Were the hours I dedicated to the cause help me or another person?" If a student goes above and beyond the expectation of the sport or activity, those hours could be applied to community service. A car wash to raise money for your field hockey team benefits the team, but is not community service. A car wash to benefit a family who had a fire in their home would be considered community service. If you are not sure, you can check with the Guidance Office.
WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS?
2025-2026 School Year: Friday May 1, 2026
